Then, BAM! there will be gems galore! (This CAN be expensive.).I've never tried it myself, but I'd imagine a full time gem hunter could make a pretty good living even without an official job. One day, quite a few months ago, I started thinking about this seriously. I realised that the first question I needed to ask was: how do I get the most cash out of the gems that my sims sell? Gem cutting in the Sims 3 is quite a complicated business. For those who have never tried, here's the basics (if you already know how to find and cut gems you can just skip the following paragraph).. First your sims need to find some gems. They can't do this without your help. Start by searching around the uninhabited areas of whatever town your sims are living in. Gems (and metals, and space rocks) rarely appear on actual lots. They can usually only be found in the surrounding empty areas. They're not difficult to find once you know where to look. Just pause the game for a minute and look around the map for any small dark lumps on the ground. Once you've found some, just give them a click and tell your sim to go collect them. After a while you'll soon be able to identify the different types of items and the different colours of gemstones and where they tend to spawn. This is important because some gems are vastly more valuable than others. Once you've got some gems, your sims can take them home and send them off in the mail to get cut. Cutting is simple. Just go into your sims inventory, click the gem, choose what type of cut you want, and your sim will shove the boxed gem into the letter box and pay the fee (a lot like paying bills). The next morning, the mail sim will deliver the freshly cut gems ready to put on display.. Sell Box for an immediate payout. Right, now that we've got the basics covered, here's the important part - specifically the strategy of choosing the best cuts for gems of different values. Different cuts cost different amounts, and the more the cuts cost, the more they increase the value of the finished gem. The trick is figuring out how many simoleons you will make for selling the gem after you subtract the cost of getting the gem cut in the first place. For example: if you start with an uncut gem worth $5. Plumbbob cut, which costs $5. Pretty basic math) In this case there would be no point. You'd be better off just selling the uncut gem and getting the same amount a day earlier. On the other hand, if you took the same gem and paid for an Oval Cut, which costs just $2. If you then sold that gem, you'd get a total of $5. Plumbbob cut version would have. So by giving the gem a less valuable cut you've actually made more money. Not a lot more, at least in this case, but when you start getting more valuable gems and more expensive cuts you can start to make huge profits. If you're going to do the calculations it helps to know how much each cut costs and how much it increases the value of the gem. Also, not all cuts are available until your sim has sent a minimum number of gems to be cut. So here's how it breaks down.. Multiplier: x. 1. Available after: 0 cuts. Multiplier: x. 1. Available after: 4 cuts. Multiplier: x. 1. Available after: 8 cuts. Multiplier: x. 2. Available after: 1. Multiplier: x. 2. Available after: 3. Cyrstal ball cut. Multiplier: x. 2. Available after: 4. Multiplier: x. 3. Available after: 6. Multiplier: x. 5. Available after: finding at least 1. That was nice to know, wasn't it? Now here's the tricky part: every time you want to cut a gem, you have to sit there with a calculator and work out exactly how much each different cut will increase the value of the gem and how much you will get for selling it after subtracting the cost of the cut.. Just kidding! I've already done that for you! Yes that's right, I actually went and sat there for I don't want to know how long with a calculator and a note pad working out how much any given cut is worth for a particular gem, which cuts are worth more or less for different values, and most importantly which cuts will give you the most profit! Now before I give you the values, there are four important points to make.. When the game calculates the final value of a cut gem it alway rounds fractions the same way. I forget which way, and I've since thrown away my pages and pages of notes so I can't check. But if you want to check my work, please note that fractions are always rounded the same way. Whether it's 5. 0. The type of gem has no effect whatsoever on the final value of the gem after it's been cut. A $5. 0 Yellow Saphire and a $5. Tanzanite given the same cut will have the same final value. These calculations are purely for determining the maximum sale value of the gem. A more expensive cut will net a more valuable gem, which will make it better for display. There's nothing stopping you from having a heart cut blue saphire, but it will be a huge waste of money if you ever wish to sell it. Early on, before you have access to all of the higher level cuts, it's still worth cutting every dirt cheap gem you find. Even though some gems will net you more money if you just sell them as is, you should still pay for an emerald cut, just to get to those higher cuts. Obviously you should save the more valuable gems until you have access to the higher level cuts, otherwise you'll be throwing away your money. Okay, so I've organised these in an X - Y - Z cut format. Which means a gem with a base uncut value between X and Y should be given a Z cut. At some specific values it makes no difference, ie. Now, with no further adeu, here's the numbers. No Cut (once you have access to the brilliant cut, it's best to just sell all of these without cutting them at all). Oval Cut. 5. 9 - 6. Oval, Pear, or Plumbbob cut. Plumbbob cut. 8. 4 Plumbbob, Marquis, Crystal Ball cut. Crystal Ball cut. Crystal Ball, Brilliant cut. Brilliant cut. 5. Heart cut Now I am 9. Feel free to check them for yourselves, but if you do it means you're even more pathetic than I am. I recomend writing these numbers down and keeping them handy whenever you're playing, just in case you want to cut some gems. So there it is. I hope this helps somebody, cuz I've just spent the better part of my evening writing this post out.. Wow, I really am pathetic, aren't I?
